By Kelly Butz :: April 29, 2011

Preparation is one of the best ways a traveler can insure minimal complications on a trip regardless of the need for accessible accommodation.

Here are some tips and tricks for those who have to travel with medications:

  1. Have your doctor write a note on letterhead stating it is necessary to carry your medications and medical equipment with you and outlining any reasonable accommodations required. Ask your doctor for tips and tricks as well!
  2. If you have scheduled times to take your medication and will be traveling across time zones, consult with your doctor on how to amend your schedule.
  3. If you plan or foresee the necessity for taking any over-the-counter medications, ask the pharmacist if they will interact with your prescribed medications.
  4. Carry your medications in their original labeled packaging or prescription bottles.
  5. Bring prescriptions for your medications in case you need to acquire your medication abroad. In some cases you may need to notarize your prescriptions, for example in Dubai.
  6. Research medical facilities and pharmacies at your destination that offer your medications, in case of an emergency.
  7. If you are planning on acquiring medication at your destination, check to see that you can obtain it in the dosages you need, as well as if insurance will cover it or if it will be out of pocket.
  8. If you are traveling to a foreign country, check to be sure your medication is permitted in that country. Some countries restrict what you can bring in (even some over-the-counter medications).
  9. If you are traveling to a foreign country, consider that your diet might be significantly different. Be aware of any adverse food-drug interactions.
  10. If your medication needs to be refrigerated, contact the location you are staying to make sure you have a refrigerator or ice readily available.
  11. Bring more than enough medication for the amount of time you will be away. You never know when there will be a delay in travel plans or other complications.
  12. Pack your medications in a bag that will be on your person at all times, and have a back-up reserve packed in separate location in case one of your bags gets lost.
  13. Have a printed list of all of your medications (brand name and active ingredients) and dosages.
  14. Connect with others on TravelinWheels to share stories, tips and tricks!
